Now that Mitt Romney is the Republican candidate, we are faced with the Obama-Romney election. Given what happened in 2008 and since, I am attracted by:
Eloquence, when at its highest pitch, leaves little room for reason or reflection; but addressing itself entirely to the fancy or the affections, captivates the willing hearers, and subdues their understanding. Happily, this pitch it seldom attains.
An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding (1748) – Section 10.
I can still see those adoring, bovine faces looking up at Obama on stage. I still remember supposed hard nut media type Chris Matthews and the “thrill running up” his leg when he saw Obama speak.
Regardless of the merits of the Republican candidate in 2008 – which weren’t great – suspension of cynicism when considering a politician is a dangerous and foolish path, no matter how well schooled they may be in delivering speeches.
